Three Components of Your Successful Presentation

An effective business presentation has three obvious, but often neglected parts. The first of these is the introduction. It is vital to convey to your audience exactly what will be covered at the very start. This initial summation will engage their interest and convey that there is substantive and valuable information to be had from you.

You should strive to keep your presentation as simple as possible. Use only the words necessary to convey the applicable thought. Do not confuse your audience with unnecessary figures or superfluous language.
Subsequent to your presentation the audience should be able to concisely describe the new information imparted to them. It is certain you’ve left many a presentation wondering what was really said during the hour of rambling. What was your impression of the speaker after those instances? Do not let that speaker be you.
Practice Makes Perfect

Toward the end of 2007, I released an innovative chess teaching set Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set using Geometry Chess Symbols to indicate each chess piece’s go buy marking GCS on the surface of each uniformed look of chess piece. My thought of making this set is to use the symmetry lines of a square to show how each piece is supposed to go – an thought of “what you go is what you see”. After my use of this set and teaching children for several months, I have some surprising and fascinating anecdotes to share.
Ancient dogs can not learn new tricks.
I have used the symbols of my invented Geometry Chess Symbol in my workbooks and made math and chess integrated worksheets and most children found that they are far more fascinating than traditional worksheets. The most fascinating is I intermixed Geometry Chess Symbols and traditional chess fonts in one workbook and children as young as 4 years ancient have no problems to accept both “symbols”. Those children who have never learned chess are accepting Ho Math and Chess with no problems at all and they found it is much simpler to learn.
In contrast, I have some teens who have been playing the traditional chess set for a while and frowned at my invented chess set, despite I assured that the difference is only the look and the moves of each piece is marked so it is really simpler. But some of them remain unconvinced and are unwilling to even give a try, why? Their minds have fixed and told them to reject it without even trying. The other problem is their brains have been trained to accept “figures” not “lines” so the adjustment perhaps is hard for some who have been playing 3-D figurine chess for their life.
It is fascinating to note that in the past Chinese had made 3–D figurine Chinese set just like the way western traditional chess set has been made but the 3-D Chinese set was never well loved. Is this because we only like to use the “instrument” the first time was introduced unless a vigorous marketing campaign has been place on? I had brought on the question that why some children still use their first–learned language to do math computation even when their mother-tongue language is already very rusty? Is there a so called “imprint’ effect on this kind of learning process? Perhaps this will be fascinating research topic.
The effect of using Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set is far more than a mere comparison of likeness or not between Ho Math and Chess to traditional chess set.
When moving a queen using traditional chess set, children would have to “translate” the image of a queen to the “moves” of how a queen is supposed to go. So my belief is there is an information “translation” retrieval process in ones’ brain. On the other hand, when using Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set, the moves are visually marked on each piece, the “translation” from a figurine to “moves” is eliminated, this perhaps clarifies why a child as young as 4 years ancient can learn chess much simpler by using Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set.
I have observed that those children who can come up with answers directly when working on multiplications without having to going through a thinking process of using “tips”, “skip counting”, or “fingers manipulations” can find answers much quicker and also they can do reverse multiplication much simpler, i.e. to find the factors of a number such as to find the factors of a number 64. I believe this has to do how a human process information, to find answers of all factors of 64 by going through “tips” or “skip counting”, or “finger manipulations” then the information is processed in a sequential way and the repertoire of information between factors and products is not “imprinted” in children’s brain so the computation power is not as strong as one trained with “indexed’ information retrieval that is the children can recall answers instantly and directly without delay by retrieving information stored in their brain.
The reason I brought my math teaching observation is to say that there could be a hidden advantage for children who have used Ho Math and Chess Teaching set. They will be able to directly retrieve the information about moves without delay. The learning curve is cut dramatically when using Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set.
Why children have no problem to switch from Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set to traditional chess set?
Children have no problem to switch from using Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set to traditional chess set and I am not abandoning traditional chess set at all but only stress that Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set is very excellent in teaching children chess. It puzzles why children can adapt to the use of playing chess from Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set to traditional chess set so easily?
Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set are all about lines and line segments and traditional chess set are 3 D objects and their moves have to be taught and remembered. These two types of designs represent very different images in children’s brains. So what effects would have on children when they have been trained by these two very different types of instruments? This again represents an fascinating research topic.
There are now two types of Chinese characters writings and for those who were trained to read simplified version seem to have less difficulty to read the traditional Chinese characters. On the contrary, those who were only taught traditional Chinese characters would have more difficulty to read simplified Chinese characters, why?
From my point of view, it is not a choice to have Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set pits against the traditional 3-D chess set, rather it is a choice to see when to use it. For example, for some children it is much simpler to use training wheels to learn how to ride a bike. Ho Math and Chess Teaching set is like a pair of training wheels for children who find it is much simpler to learn how to ride a bike by using training wheels.
In my own experience I find that it is much simpler for young children as young as 4 years ancient to lean chess without pain by using Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set, so why not use it? Later on, if children choose to use traditional chess set, then it is fine too since the traditional chess set is an international standard.

For us Westerners, exchanging business cards is an nearly automatic action, often carried out distractedly. For a Japanese person, the same action becomes fraught with much greater formality and importance.
When plotting a business trip abroad, all Japanese business men and women make sure they have more than enough bilingual business cards with them. Naturally, they’d appreciate it if foreigners did the same!
Therefore, obtaining a meishi [名刺], as it is called in Japanese, is an essential step for anyone wishing to approach the Japanese market.
The person’s name and surname and the company name are indispensable pieces of information. These are transliterated – i.e. the transformed into Japanese script on a phonetic basis – using the katakana alphabet. Translating a European name using kanji ideograms is not recommended, as this could give rise to ambiguity or the use of improper and sometimes even offensive terms.
The company name must also be transliterated into katakana – to allow your Japanese counterpart to pronounce it properly – without, but, changing existing logos or corporate trademarks.
Another fundamental piece of information is your profession, and in particular your role within the company. In this case, a clear and accurate translation is required.
Roles and professions can be hard to know, even among Westerners – certainly even more so since the use of English terms has started to gain hold to define or enhance certain corporate positions. Their translation must be accompanied by an explanation of the actual duties involved, which will be translated into Japanese in order to communicate the person’s actual social status and choice-making powers.
As regards postal and email addresses, and telephone and fax numbers, standard conventions apply. The business card format is strictly 90 x 55mm.
Now that you have designed your business card down to a T (without of course neglecting its more graphical elements), it’s time to concentrate on etiquette!
Whenever a Japanese person gives you a business card, take a small time to read through it. Placing it casually in your pocket or briefcase without so much as a glance is viewed as impolite. Next, hand over your own meishi Japanese side up, in order to aid perusal.
Most of the above suggestions apply to the Chinese market, with just a few variations.

While on the one hand we are witnessing a relentless growth in the Chinese market, generally directed towards the English language, on the other hand in vast regions of the country there also exists a highly conservative market rooted in the more restrictive use of the simplified and traditional pictogram – or ideogram, as it is more commonly known.
In either case, but, the Chinese like to exchange mingpian [名片].
Here, this is viewed as an vital and formal, yet pleasant occasion, accompanied by a special gestural expressiveness.
Hand your card over using both your hands, with the Chinese side facing upwards, and bend your head slightly as a sign of respect.
If you are sitting round a table when a Chinese person hands you his or her business card, place it carefully before you or in a card wallet. Do not use it to take notes or for any other improper use, as this would be regarded as highly impolite.
In China, as in Japan, one of the main purposes of a business card is to determine the person’s degree of influence and choice-making powers within his or her company.
In the land of wisdom, but, the role stated on your business card must allow your interlocutor to know your level of experience. Therefore, be careful to avoid the use of terms that may in some way play down your professional value, such as “vice” (e.g. vice-manager, vice-president, etc).
Business cards [명함] intended for the Korean market must pay special attention to postal conventions and the use of colours.
In Korea, the address starts with the country, followed by the region, the city and the street, stating the post code at the very end. It is always excellent practice to state the international dialling code in full. A word of warning: Koreans only ever use red for the names of the deceased, and it would certainly be most embarrassing if you were to print your name in red on your business card.
Finally, avoid using business cards translated into Chinese or Japanese, thinking these will do just as well.
The use of Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters requires a greater printing area, therefore, for ease of perusal, it is best to use at least a 10 or 12 point font-size, as in the following example:文言.
Whatever Eastern country you visit, you must never be caught unprepared when a partner questions you for more information on your company or products. To this end, the use of bilingual summary documents could be very useful.

Jamie Cuthbertson talks about DAISY and demonstrates how a DAISY player can be used to enable blind and visually impaired people access to their favourite books. DAISY stands for Digital Accessible Information SYstem. DAISY formats such as digital talking books can be used with a specialised CD player or computer software. Increasingly DAISY can be played on handheld mobile devices. In order for DAISY to be accessible the original format must be correctly formatted with appropriate heading styles, page numbers, and image descriptions.
